Family Time

I spent all of last week at Bethany Beach, DE, for a family reunion! My mom's family hadn't gathered together for an occasion outside of a wedding in the past twelve years, so it was a very special event. Over 50 people stayed in three houses near the beach – during the day, we went to the beach or boardwalk, and in the evenings we all ate together and had structured sharing time. It was wonderful to be together and spend time with the little kids, and I even got a little work done! Here are some highlights:

French Horn duets

Ocean City, MD boardwalk – that's the Atlantic in the background.

 Playing with Apphia

 Kite-flying at the beach

Building sand mounds (before destroying them)

We had an Iron Chef-style cooking contest on the last day. Here's Team Tapir, preparing five dishes all with the secret ingredient: blueberry preserves!

After my family's reunion, we stopped in Maryland to visit Dave's family. We went on a train ride with his niece Amie.

I was kind of devastated when Family Reunion was over, but I'm gradually acclimating to regular life. The good news is that we'll all be together again...at the wedding in May!

    1. i would've wanted you on my iron chef team, Julie!! for starters, we made flatbread with a layer of blueberry preserves, then caramelized onions, bacon, and gorgonzola. we had fresh pasta with blueberry streaks and a garlic/red wine/blueberry tomato sauce. then we had pork loin stuffed with spinach, red pepper, and blueberries, with a blueberry preserve reduction. we had a blueberry milkshake layered with fresh strawberry and whipped cream, and finally, a napoleon dessert with layers of blueberry and raspberry preserves. also, the "theme" was red, white, and blue, so we tried our best to incorporate all the colors, too!
